For durability and the greatest return on investment, A. Thayer Smith III recommends that you consider replacing damaged carved and milled woodwork with a durable, lightweight cast composite that resists the elements more effectively than the low quality second or third growth lumber available today.  We can take molds from existing elements and cast the new work in this durable material.  We can also recreate them from photographs or close inspection of the work.

This versatile composite can be milled, bored, carved and cut, just like wood, in the shop or on the job site.  A. Thayer Smith III can do installations, introducing efficiencies into the process as full control allows.  Regarding strength, our composite is an engineered product, and we can build structural properties into the work that were absent from the original material.

		Carved Wood Ornament, Trickett Hall Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Restoration of Monumental Wood Carvings, on Tower A. Thayer Smith III, Inc. replicated missing monumental carved wood ornament in a durable composite. Using only the paint "shadow" left on the wall for guidance, we recreated a design consistent with the period.
		Wood Balustrade, Trickett Hall, Dickenson School of Law Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Wood Balustrade on Clock Tower, Chinese Chippendale Design The diagonal design of the belfry balustrade fretwork permitted accelerated penetration by the elements. Working from photographs, we produced a single mold so that the entire set of diagonal "baluster" fretwork was cast in one piece of composite.
