Historic columns, and column bases and capitals, are vulnerable to the weathering and deterioration due to exposure.  The Capitals form watercatches and, moreover, often have exposed detail.  The column bases and the lower sections of the columns are prone to splashback and to moisture from the accumulation of snow and ice.  A. Thayer Smith III has long experience with these types of repairs and has developed innovative durable, water resistent replacement materials, such as specialized milled PVC for column bases.
